MEDIA ADVISORY
For Immediate Release
“ROGERS Chinatown Street Festival 2010”
August 13th, 2010
AUGUST 4, 2010 - (CALGARY, ALBERTA) The Calgary Chinese Merchants Association (CCMA) was originally founded in 1991; and shortly after that, creating the Hong Kong Expo which spanned three days that laid a solid foundation of Chinatown Street Festival. In 2000, the Association took lead in planning public celebrations for the successful reopening of the Centre Street Bridge. Today, we enter the 10th Anniversary of Chinatown Street Festival (CSF) and celebrate Chinatown Centenary.
“Last 10 years, CSF has grown into what we all envision as A FESTIVAL FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. For those who attend, it creates a social bond between the people encouraging social inclusion,” reinforced by Ken Lee who first joined as merchant member, then as sponsor, and now as the organizer, “as we stand at the threshold of the Chinatown Centenary, it is very natural to look at the Chinatown and the community now and then. After enduring tremendous hardships from the early 1900s, the community have since experienced steady growth in both population and influence.”
CSF is a tribute to the predecessors a century ago, and has embraced traditional cultures while also encouraged new activities that inspired by youth and led by youth. “I can see the CSF itself can liberate and help to shape chinatown to be a fun place to socialize and a fashionable buzz with arts and fine dining. I urge you to pay a visit on August 14 to experience the dynamic of this community!” Ken commented.
ROGERS Chinatown Street Festival is to be held August 14, 2010 (Saturday) 10:00am - 8:00pm, Rain or Shine, Free Admission in the heart of Calgary Chinatown

HOW WAS THE CHINATOWN STREET FESTIVAL STARTED?
We are a young and growing cultural festival that began in the fall of 2000. The Calgary Chinese Merchants Association (CCMA) took a leadership role in planning public celebrations for the successful reopening of the Centre Street Bridge. When these events attracted more than 35,000 people and generated significant media coverage, CCMA decided to initiate an annual one day Chinatown Street Festival. The result has been a growing an evolving cultural celebration and a showcase of Chinese culture with a focus on sharing it with all Calgarians.
The Calgary Chinese Merchants Association is a non-profit association that promotes, protects and improves Chinatown Community. It does not receive city or merchant funding, but relies on revenue-generating projects and sponsorships to support its activities.
