CCCCC planned events to celebrate the Calgary Chinatown Centennial

May 7, 2010

The 4th Committee Meeting on Sunday, May 2nd.

The Press Release on May 7, 2010 from the spoken person Peter Chan of Calgary Chinatown Centennial Celebration (CCCCC) said that, after the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late nineteenth century, some Chinese workers came to Calgary. They initially lived close to 8th Avenue, 3rd street SE and 10th Avenue, 1st Street, SW. In 1910, due to the development of the area around the railway station, many of them were re-located to the present Chinatown site and had since then settled down there.  After 100 years, Calgary Chinatown has become a vital part within the city of Calgary.

At the beginning of this year, the City of Calgary has approved $500,000 in funding to mark the anniversary.  The money would be used for Street Festival, Chinatown beautification, documentation of the 100 years of history and youth engagement projects.

Chinese Calgarians generally feel that celebrating the Centennial of Calgary Chinatown is not the sole responsibility of the Government and that the general public, especially people from the Chinese community should also take an active role in it.  With this in mind, many organizations and individuals from the grass roots have come together and formed the “Calgary Chinatown Centennial Celebration Committee”. This Committee is self motivated, self organized, self sufficient and all members are volunteers.  With collaborated efforts, the following events have been planned to celebrate the Calgary Chinatown Centennial.

Sunday, June 13 - Kick-off celebration with opening ceremony, parade and two hours entertainment program
Months of May to July – Children Drawing Competition with the theme of “My View of Chinatown”
Sunday, July 4: Art Exhibition and Multi-cultural Performance at the Chinese Cultural Centre
Saturday July 31 – Senior and Family Day
Sunday, August 29 – Chinese Cultural Performance at the Chinese Cultural Centre
Friday, September 3 – Finale Banquet at the Regency Palace Restaurant
