Lieutenant Governor of Alberta attended the HKCIAC’s 17th Anniversary and Senior Appreciation Banquet

The Hong Kong Chinese Immigrant Association of Calgary (HKCIAC), held the 17th Anniversary celebration and the senior members’ appreciation dinner. This event occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Regency Palace Restaurant in Chinatown. Over 620 people attended the banquet at that evening.

VIP who attended the celebration and appreciation dinner included the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, His Honour Norman L. Kwong and his wife, Her Honour Mary Kwong, the Deputy Speaker of Legislature of Alberta and MLA Wayne Cao and his wife, Mrs. Kim Cao, the Consuls of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Calgary Li Feng and Wang Gongming, the City aldermen Jim Stevenson and his wife, the event sponsors, community leaders and representatives.

After the opening ceremony – sang the National Anthem, which led by the Deputy Speaker of Legislature of Alberta and MLA Wayne Cao. The President of HKCIAC Paul Lui made a bilingual opening speech, and followed by His Honour Norman L. Kwong, the Deputy Speaker of Legislature of Alberta and MLA Wayne Cao, the Deputy Mayor of the City and Aldermen Jim Stevenson, and the Consuls of PRC in Calgary Li Feng, each one made a short congratulation speech.


Directors of HKCIAC sung the “Happy Birthday to You” to the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, His Honour Norman L. Kwong for His 80th Birthday, which is coming up on October 24.


The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, His Honour Norman L. Kwong and his wife, Her Honour Mary Kwong, were very delightful for the pre-celebration of His 80th Birthday.

Lui stated in his speech, the HKCIAC was established in 1992, after a group of entrepreneurs and professionals immigrated to Calgary from Hong Kong. It was a kind of businessmen club at the beginning. However, after the year 2000, due to lots of entrepreneur and professional moved back to their original place, their membership kept decreasing. In 2004, the secretary of the association Magdalene Chan helped to register it as a non-profit organization and altered their direction. Since Lui was elected as the president of the association, and has leaded the association to become a more open, social and charitable organization. Now, they have over 600 members, including 300 senior members, and it becomes one of the active and potential associations in the Chinese community.

80th Birthday of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
According to the Chinese tradition, the 80th Birthday is a remarkable and honorable occasion for a senior. At that evening, the Directors of HKCIAC rose up and sang “Happy Birthday to You” of the pre-celebration to the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, His Honour Norman L. Kwong for His 80th Birthday, which is coming up on October 24.

During the feast, there were lots of singing, folk dances, door prizes drawing and ballroom dancing. Especially, when there were few young performers who has shown their talents in the banquet, they were the new bloods of the association.
