A fundraising campaign is called by the local communities, to help those unfortunates affected by the devastating earthquakes and typhoons in south-east Asia recently. The Typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines and part of Vietnam, and the huge earthquakes which struck western Sumatra in Indonesia.

According to the news, the earthquake was not the only disaster occurred in the south-east Asia region last week. Floods crushed homes in Cambodia and Vietnam, and submerged much of the Philippine capital, Manila where more than 330 people died.

The Red Cross has been providing food, water, blankets, cooking pots and tarpaulins. They are now looking to ensure a safe water supply and reconnect families who have been separated.

The English Secretary for the Calgary Tsung Tsin Benevolent Association (CTTBA) and Alberta Chinese Community Congress, Khin Chew said on his e-mail, “In response to the major fundraising appeal for South-East Asia disaster relief, I have been talking to a number of individuals, organizations and groups, and have jointly decided to call the first meeting to be held this Thursday, October 8 at 6.00pm, at the CTTBA, which is located at 101, 114 - 3rd Avenue SW, Calgary (Chinatown), to discuss the possibility of getting all the interested groups to work together on this fundraiser.”

Chew also mentioned that both Deputy House Speaker MLA Wayne Cao and Calgary Mackay riding MLA Teresa Woo-Paw, have indicated their supports for this fundraiser.

Please feel free to tell whoever you believe will be interested in helping for this fundraising campaign. Khin Chew’s temporary contact: cell#: 403-605-6638, e-mail: khin.chew@focus.ca
