The Calgary Harmony of Arts Association entertained seniors with Cantonese Operas, Singings and Appreciation Dinner

On October 3rd and 4th, the Calgary Harmony of Arts Association (CHAA) held the annual Cantonese opera and singing shows at the Chinese Cultural Centre, to entertain the local senior citizens. This year is the 18th Anniversary of the association; their celebration program for the association included Cantonese singing and opera presentations. After the show on October 4th, the organization also held a senior appreciation dinner at the Centre at 6:00pm; they had invited over four hundred seniors to attend this free dinner.

CHAA
CHAA is one of the leading Cantonese music and opera performing organizations in Chinatown. The organization is founded in 1991, and has about 150 members at present.

Three Little Musicians
In the adult musical team of the association, there were three little musicians – young blood in the group, their ages are between of 13 to 17. These teenagers can already understand, read and play very special types of musical notes and skills. They were also performing their talents in front of the adult and senior audiences. They are Anita Phung, Benjamin Hon and Cynthia Hon.

Cantonese Opera Gets World Recognition
According to the press releases from the Hong Kong Government on Friday, October 2 2009, the Cantonese opera (Yueju), which was jointly applied by Guangdong, Macao and Hong Kong SAR governments through the Chinese Central Government for dedication, was officially inscribed onto the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”, making it the first item of the world intangible cultural heritage in Hong Kong.
