88 Taiwan Typhoon Disaster Relief Fundraiser “Goodwill Mission” Concert held at U of C’s Theatre

The Oversea Compatriot Affairs Commission (OCAC) of Republic of China (ROC) has sent the Taiwan Cultural Delegation, to present a folk songs and music performance in Calgary at the U of C Theatre on Wednesday, September 30, 2009.

According to the Deputy Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Vancouver, Sophia Chuang said, over 300 audiences attended and enjoyed the concert that night.

She stated that the “Goodwill Mission” concert was organized by the Sino-Canada Culture Association in Calgary. Many thanks for the local Chinese that pay their concern about those unfortunate victims in this disaster, and to contribute their funds for the “88 Typhoon Disaster Relief” with an open and warm heart.

The Minister of ROC Oversea Compatriot Affairs Commissions (OCAC), Wu Ying-yi also sent his thank-you message to audiences through the pre-recorded film. Wu acknowledged, “We also hope that through this event, we can support compatriots overseas to organize fund-raising events and convey the message, “Give a hand to rebuild hope”, and “Be thankful and distribute love back to your society, to the public”.

The concert was started with the opening program, the Classical Chinese music, which was presented by the five members, the Taipei Neo Wave Ensemble. Other programs were followed as Tu Pei-Cen’s solo “Youthful Voices Rise in Song”, Wang Ruey-Yu’s “Campus Folk Sounds”, Wang Hai-Ling and the Taipei Neo Wave Ensemble presented “Good Old Days”, the Taipei Neo Wave Ensemble performed another music “Melodious Instruments”, the Southern Duet presented the duet song “Chorus of Nature”, Ye Jia-Xiu’s “Unforgettable Campus Folk Tunes”, the finale show was a full cast ensemble, they sang “Al-Request Live Performance”. All performers have shown their enjoyable performances to give the audiences a delightful evening.

At the evening, there was also a special presentation, Tony P.K. Wong, the local Chinese was appointed as the Coordinator of OCAC in Calgary. The director of the delegation Mr. Tian Chwu-Feng and Ms. Chuang represent Minister Wu was presented the honourary appointment certificate to him.

The newly appointed Coordinator Tony Wong recalled, on August 8, 2009 the flood and mass landslide disaster caused thousands of people homeless in Southern Taiwan, a lot of oversea compatriots have organized fundraising for those people to rebuild their homes, which included Calgary. Therefore, the OCAC set the theme “Goodwill Mission” for the delegation to overseas, in appreciation and thanks to the compatriots.

Wong said, it was a great performance. A group of five young and pretty girls performed with Chinese musical instruments, but playing in a modern way. The folk singers performing new wave in singing tradition. The MC of the night was full humor, which always made amuses the audience.

Some audiences said that the performance in the whole evening was great and they were happy to make donations as well.

The Goodwill Mission will continue their performance trip to Honolulu, Seattle, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver, Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon, San Jose, Sacramento, San Francisco and Fresno.
