“Hands of the Community” Mural unveiled in Chinatown

Under the beautiful sunshine in Calgary on Thursday, Sep. 3, 2009, the first inventive hand prints mural in Chinatown unveiled by Deputy Mayor, the alderman John Mar, MLA Teresa Woo-Paw, one of the property-owners Mr. Lam, community leader Jack Yee and two policy officers at the corner on Centre Street and 2nd Avenue S.E. The delightful mural was organized by the Chinatown Safety Council, which was under their Chinatown Safety and Community Engagement Initiative program.

As the organizer David Marquis said, “The title of the mural, ‘Hands of the Community’, symbolizes people coming together for the better in the community, and wishing to leave a courageous and strong legacy for the next generations.”

This mural is the first mural in Chinatown that represents the community. The title of the mural, ‘Hands of the Community’, symbolizes people coming together to better their community and wishing to leave a courageous and strong legacy behind for the next generations to be a part of. This is history in the making.
